About the 45 Class Locomotive

The 45 class are a class of diesel-electric locomotives that were built for the New South Wales Government Railways between 1962 and 1964. A total of 40 locomotives were built by Alco's Australian licensee AE Goodwin, Auburn, and are based on the Alco DL-541 model. In June 1962 the first of theses locomotives,4501, entered service initially on the Main Southern line.

During the remainder of the 1960s and the early 1970s the 45 class were seen on passenger and freight workings on most main lines across the NSW network.  During 1971 the class was then allocated to Broadmeadow, where they remained until their withdrawal. In June 1984 they were banned as a lead locomotive as a result of union demands and were relegated to trailing unit status. Due to this they were mostly confined to workings in the northern region of NSW apart from some isolated occasions working freight only and were able to be used on Sydney metropolitan trip and Liverpool Range banking duties.

They remained in service until replaced by FreightCorp's 82 Class in 1994/95. Thirty-two were auctioned in December 1994 with most being sold for scrap. Five have been preserved 4501 (Operational),4502, 4520 (Operational), 4521, 4528 with 4532(45s1) and 4537(103) still operational by private operators.

DCC with Sound and Light Modifications

In January 2015, Auscision released the 45 Class locomotive which includes a 21 Pin socket for easily fitting a DCC decoder plus a speaker enclosure that suits a 16x35mm speaker. There are micro switches under the model for turning lights on/off in DC. In DCC all lights will operate directional with no individual control.

For this installation we recommend the ESU LokSound V4.0 (Sound) with our Custom Sound Project for the 45 Class or the LokPilot V4.0 (No Sound) for those not wishing sound.  We offer several different options of DCC installations for this model to suit all budgets and can supply the decoders only for the DIY installers.

We have tweaked the motor control of the ESU decoder to provide super slow smooth speed which is perfect for shunting operations allowing the loco to move ever so slowly towards its rolling stock. Also for those wanting the locomotive to move off slowly and build up speed like the prototype. You will be impressed with the smooth slow speed motor control.

We offer a light modification for Auscision's 45 Class to separate the lights for a more prototypical operation.

We can separate the front headlight, white markers and red marker lights for a more prototypical operational practices in DCC. Both the white and red marker lights at the front and rear can be controlled individually or directionally as well as the front and rear headlights. That allows for no rear red marker lights to be on when the loco is carrying a load behind it or both the front and rear red markers switched on at the same time when the locomotive is standing in a siding or shunting and you can even run with just the front white markers switched on. You can control what lights you want switched on depending on how you are running your 45 Class Locomotive.

You can also still operate all the lights directional as the way the model was delivered.

For a Standard Light Modification we can separate the lights as follows:

1) Headlights - directional with 1 function button
2) Marker Lights - directional with 1 function button
3) Front Headlight - on/off with 1 function button

4) Front White Markers - on/off with 1 function button

5) Front Red Markers - on/off with 1 function button

6) Rear White Markers - on/off with 1 function button

7) Rear Red Markers - on/off with 1 function button

The DCC Solutions NSW 42 Class Custom Sound Project - EMD 16-567C
is packed with sounds and features n
ot found on other sound decoders

Our Custom NSW 45 Class Sound Project now includes these new features:

Full Throttle – Drive Hold

This feature allows you to simulate a loaded or empty train by pressing the F1 function button. When the button is pressed, the motor will remain at a constant speed, while the sound can be controlled independently by adjusting the speed on the throttle. This exciting, new feature gives the operator the ability to have the train crawl in notch 8 or coast at 100 km/h. Release the Drive Hold function button and you simply go back to throttle-controlled speed and motion

Coasting on Demand
This feature allows you to enter coasting mode whenever you want with a press of a button.Often when coming to a stop, the throttle of a real locomotive is put into Idle and the locomotive coasts to a stop. Another situation that occurs is that once a train is up to speed when operating over
rolling countryside, the driver can coast to maintain a certain speed. By pressing the coast function button, the sound drops into coasting and remains there. Using the throttle speed control, you can now speed up or slow down the train with the sound remaining in coasting mode.
Press the function button to exit coasting and the sound will exit and return to whatever speed is set when exiting.

Working Brake

Press the Brake Function button and your locomotive will come to a stop at a much shorter distance than if you were to bring it to a stop by reducing the throttle speed. Release the brake and your locomotive will move off again or choose to have it remain stationary when the brake is released.

Working Dynamic Brake

Apply the Dynamic Brakes and the Prime Mover will wind down to idle while the Dynamic Fans engage to assist with cooling. Reduce the throttle and the decoder's dynamic motor logic will reduce your speed faster than normal. Disengage Dynamic Braking and the primer mover will returned to it's notched speed and the fans will turn off.

Random Start-up Sequences with Move Off and Stopping Sounds

Now with random start-up sequences including hot or cold engine starts your start up and shut down will not always sound the same.

As your locomotive begins to move off you will hear the sounds of brakes releasing with random speed activated wheel squeal, rail noises and other sounds. Some of these sounds are random or speed sensitive that will turn on/off automatically depending on your take off speed. When the locomotive comes to a stop you will hear the squeal of the brakes, air releases and then the compressor will cut in automatically to fill the reservoirs with air until full and will cut out.

Coupling and Release with Shunting Mode
Activate coupling or release and your loco will automatically reduce it's speed to allow for for a more realistic coupling or release operation. Once the operation is completed your loco will continue to run at slow speed for a few more seconds before returning to the speed set on your throttle.
Remastered Horn Sounds
A new remastered NSWGR WABCo A/B Series playable and short blast horn

And includes all these great features to make your Auscision 45 Class drive and sound impressive.
