About the NSW Tangara Suburban Electric Passenger Train
The T sets, also referred to as the “Tangara” trains, originating from an Aboriginal word that means ‘to go’, are a class of electric multiple units operated by Sydney Trains. In July 1986, the Government of New South Wales awarded A Goninan & Co a contract to build 450 double-deck carriages, with five additional spare driving trailers ordered in 1996.
The Tangara's were built as 4 car sets and first entered service 12th April 1988 and continued until 1995, initially under the State Rail Authority and later CityRail.
The T sets were the “third-generation” trains for Sydney's rail fleet, coinciding with the final withdrawals of the Standard Suburban carriages nicknamed “Red Rattlers” sets from their service in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Tangara trains were initially built as two classes; the outer-suburban G sets and the suburban T sets, before being merged as all T-sets after successive refurbishments starting in 2009.
Overall, the Tangara T-set have had various refurbishments carried out in 2003, 2009-2010, 2014 and 2021 with 447 carriages still remain in service.
The Tangara T-sets usually operate on the following lines:
T1 North Shore & Western Line: Emu Plains to City via Parramatta, City to Berowra or Hornsby via Gordon
T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line: Bondi Junction to Waterfall & Cronulla via Hurstville & Sutherland
T7 Olympic Park Line: Lidcombe to Olympic Park
T9 Northern Line: Gordon to Hornsby via Strathfield
SCO South Coast Line: Waterfall & Thirroul to Port Kembla
DCC with Sound and Light Modifications
In April 2021, Auscision released the NSW “Tangara” Suburban Electric Passenger Train, which has a DCC Ready 21 Pin socket in the front car and includes a speaker enclosure for fitting a speaker. The rear car also has a DCC Ready 21 Pin socket that requires a DCC decoder to operate the lights in the rear car. There is no motor in the rear car.
The model comes with operating LED headlights, marker lights, blue guards light and ditch lights with manual override switches under the front and rear car to turn the lights on/off. In DCC, all the lights will operate directional.
For DCC Sound we recommend the ESU LokSound 5 DCC decoder programmed with the DCC Solutions Custom “Tangara” Sound Project or the ESU LokPilot 5 DCC for those no requiring sound.
Also, available is an optional ESU LokSound FX 5 DCC decoder programmed with the DCC Solutions Custom “Tangara” Rear Car Sound Project to add sound to the rear car.
Our Custom Sound Project is NOT the Generic sound file from ESU and Auscision..... It's Better!
And it does contain prototypical recorded sounds.
We offer full individual light control for the Auscision Tangara to separate the lights for a more prototypical operation
Our Custom NSW Tangara Class Sound Project offers a lighting setup for this Auscision model to separate the headlights, marker lights, blue guards light and ditch lights for individual DCC control. This will provide more prototypical NSW Railways practice lighting operation when running your Auscision Tangara model. Directional all light control will still be available.
Unlike ESU/Auscision factory sound which uses 2 sound slots to operate the lights in their models, our light modification does not use any sound slots for lighting. Therefore, all the 10 sound processing channels are available to play sounds when using all the lighting, so you will get the full sound experience all the time.
The DCC Solutions NSW Tangara Electric Custom Sound Project
is packed with sounds and features not found on other sound decoders,
being offered on the Australian market, especially factory fitted sound
Factory Fitted Sound only offers very basic sound + features
So why not get fully featured sound from DCC Solutions
Our Custom Sound Project now includes these fantastic features:
Custom Built NSW Tangara T-Set Electric Sound Project
This is not just a basic electric ESU/Factory sound project but a completely custom-built and tested sound project by DCC Solutions that contains recorded sounds with customised sound programming plus extra features not available anywhere.
Not only have we built a sound project for the front car, but a second sound project for the rear car as an option.
This will make your NSW Tangara model a uniquely, impressive driving and sounding passenger train that will turn heads!
Coasting on Demand
This feature allows you to enter coasting mode whenever you want with a press of a button. Often, when coming to a stop, the throttle of a real locomotive is put into idle and the locomotive coasts to a stop. Another situation that occurs is that once a train is up to speed when operating over rolling countryside, the driver can coast to maintain a certain speed. By pressing the coast function button, the sound drops into coasting and remains there. Using the throttle speed control, you can now speed up or slow down the train, with the sound remaining in coasting mode. Press the function button to exit coasting, the sound will return to the speed that's set when exiting.
Working Brake
Press the Brake Function button, and your Tangara will come to a stop at a much shorter distance than if you were to bring it to a stop by reducing the throttle speed. Release the brake and your Tangara will move off again, or choose to have it remain stationary when the brake is released. The brake can also be used while driving to slow the Tangara up.
Brake Squeal on Deceleration
Activate this function and when you reduce the throttle speed, your locomotive will actually begin braking and slow up quicker as you continue to lower the throttle speed, and you will hear the squeal of the brakes. Accelerating releases the brakes, stopping the squeal.
Working Regenerative Braking (Dynamic Brake)
Apply the Dynamic Brakes and the Tangara will automatically begin to slow up as the regenerative braking starts to work, then the Cooling Fans engage to assist with cooling. Reduce the throttle, and the sound projects dynamic braking logic will reduce your speed faster than normal. Disengage Dynamic Braking and the Tangara will return to its notched speed and the cooling fans will turn off.
Random Start-up Sequences with Move Off and Stopping Sounds
Now with random start-up sequences your start-up and shut down will not always sound the same.
As your Tangara begins to move off you will hear the sounds of brakes releasing with random speed activated wheel squeal or rail clanking, rail noises and other sounds. Some of these sounds are random or speed sensitive that will turn on/off automatically depending on your take-off speed. When the Tangara comes to a stop you will hear the squeal of the brakes, air releases and then randomly the compressor will cut in automatically to fill the reservoirs with air until full and will cut out.
Random Sounds
While the factory fitted sound will only offer you 1-2 random sounds, DCC Solutions will have up to 10 random sounds that will play when either the loco is stopping or moving, to create even more realism to running your model.
Electric Passenger Train Sounds
Our Custom Sound Project includes sounds often heard on the NSW Rail Network. Opening and closing of passenger carriage doors, guard's whistles and platform station announcements are some inclusions you will find to really add to the realism of operating an Electric Passenger Train. Optional personalised station announcements can be produced and added to the sound project.
