About the B Class

The B class are a class of diesel locomotives built by Clyde Engineering, Granville for the Victorian Railways in 1952-53 with a total of 26 units being built. Ordered and operated by the Victorian Railways, they were the first mainline diesel locomotives built for the Victorian Railways and initiated the dieselisation of the Victorian system that saw them used on both passenger and freight services, with many remaining in service today, both in preserved and revenue service.  The design was based on the successful American EMD F-unit locomotives with the distinctive bulldog nose, however they were unusual in having a streamlined drivers cab at each end.

In service, the 26 locomotives of the class operated on broad gauge lines throughout Victoria, working the majority of the important passenger trains, as well as fast freights. While costing more than steam locomotives to run the Victorian Chief Engineers Office found that one B class did the work of three steam locomotives so a decision was fast tracked, and steam locomotives began to be scrapped in large numbers. The B Class success led to further dieselisation, with the delivery of the T class branch line units from 1955, and the single ended S class mainline units from 1957.

In the 1980's, it was decided to rebuild the B class with new traction equipment as the A class. The rebuild contract was given to Clyde Engineering, Rosewater, in January 1983 with the first unit entering service in May 1984. The project was abandoned in mid 1985 after rising costs due to structural fatigue, with the 11th and final rebuild delivered in August 1985. At the same time newer high power locomotives had been delivered, including the N class passenger units and the G class freight locomotives. The B class were gradually retired by V/Line from 1982 with some scrapped. Six were purchased by West Coast Railway in the early 1990's but following West Coast Railway's demise in August 2004 these were sold to Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia and refurbished with some being resold to Southern Shorthaul Railroad. This saw some converted to standard gauge and their operation increased to include New South Wales.
DCC with Sound and Light Modifications

In October 2009, Auscision released the B Class locomotive which included an 8 Pin socket for easily fitting a DCC decoder but not provision for a speaker in the chassis. The model only comes with headlights and white marker with numberboard lights and in DC/DCC all lights operate directional.


According to Auscision "their Victorian research team wanted the loco marker lights to work this way as on the prototype, that is the white markers are only illuminated on the end for the direction of travel. On the prototype the only time red marker lights are on is when running light engine and as most modellers have a train behind their loco red markers are not required.”

So that is why the model has no red markers.


We offer a light modification for Auscision's B Class to separate the lights

We can separate the front headlight from the white markers/numberboards for a more prototypical operational practice in DCC. 

Both the white markers with the numberboards at the front and rear can be controlled individually or directionally as well as the front and rear headlights. This allows you to run with markers only and turn the headlight on/off separately. And if you "have a train behind your loco" when reversing you can have no lights come on at the rear of the locomotive.


For a Standard Light Modification we can separate the lights as follows:

1) Headlights - directional with 1 function
2) Marker Lights - directional with 1 function
3) Front Headlight - on/off with 1 function

4) Front White Markers - on/off with 1 function

5) Rear White Markers - on/off with 1 function

6) Rear Headlight - on/off with 1 function

For this installation we recommend the ESU LokSound V4.0 (Sound) programmed with the DCC Solutions Custom Sound Project to provide the most realistic sound for the B Class or the LokPilot V4.0 (No Sound) for those not wishing sound. Alternatively you may wish to choose the ESU Select Sound Decoder programmed with the ESU factory generic sound. We offer several different options of DCC installations using various brands of sound decoders for this model to suit all budgets and can supply the decoders/speaker only for the DIY installers.

Our Custom Sound Project now includes these new features:


Full Throttle – Drive Hold

This feature allows you to simulate a loaded or empty train by pressing the F1 function button. When the button is pressed, the motor will remain at a constant speed, while the sound can be controlled independently by adjusting the speed on the throttle. This exciting, new feature gives the operator the ability to have the train crawl in notch 8 or coast at 100 km/h. Release the Drive Hold function button and you simply go back to throttle-controlled speed and motion.

Coasting on Demand

Pressing F5 will activate coasting on demand to suit your running environment allowing variable speed coasting so changes in speed will not turn it off until you turn it off.

Working Brake

Press the Brake Function button and your locomotive will come to a stop at a much shorter distance than if you were to bring it to a stop by reducing the throttle speed. Release the brake and your locomotive will move off again or choose to have it remain stationary when the brake is released.

Move Off and Stopping Sounds
When your locomotive begins to move you will hear the sounds of brakes releasing plus some random sounds programmed into our Custom Sound Project that are activated with the moving off and stopping of the locomotive to add to the realism.

Disengage and the prime mover will shift back to its prior notch               and continues along.
