About the NSWGR 30T Class
From 1926 came the electrification of the inner suburban rail lines and resulted in a surplus of the 30 class, so on 22 August 1928 the first locomotive to be delivered as a converted C30T tender 4-6-0 type locomotive was 3088. This was achieved by cutting off the frames at the rear of the cab and removing the side tanks. There was no need to build tenders as there were a number available from scrapped locomotives or from locomotives where the original tenders had already been replaced, notably C32 and D50 class locomotives. A total of 77 locomotives were converted by July 1933.
Between September 1940 to April 1957 a total of 28 were fitted with superheaters. This work included fitting new cylinders with piston valves and extended smokeboxes. Most of these 28 superheated locomotives received a riveted on 'drumhead' extensions to their smokeboxes.
The first C30T to be withdrawn was 3126 in December 1958 with the last 3090 withdrawn in August 1972.
Seven were preserved - 3001, 3016, 3026, 3028, 3075, 3090, 3102.
DCC with Sound and Light Modifications
Wombat Models released the NSWGR C30T Class Locomotive in June 2018. Two tender variations are available, six-wheel and the longer bogie tender which will be released at a later date. The model is DCC and sound ready - NMRA compliant DCC socket in the tender, and provision for a 20mm round speaker in the tender floor. The model has a working headlight and in reverse has white markers on the rear of the tender.
No rear red markers are installed. It also is fitted with an LED light on the cab roof.
On the six-wheel tender version, two switches are located on the underside of the tender which allows you to turn off the lights in the model when running it on DC.

Full Throttle – Heavy Load
This feature allows you to simulate a loaded, empty or a hardworking steam train by pressing the F1 function button. When the button is pressed, it activates heavy load and the motor speed will be locked at a constant speed, while the sound changes into an intense chuff when you increase the throttle speed so this can simulate a hard working steam locomotive. This exciting, new feature gives the operator the ability to have their steam loco crawling along the track while having an intense chuff sound. Release the Heavy Load function button and you simply go back to throttle-controlled speed and motion
Coasting on Demand
Apart from automatic coasting which is activated by a quick reduction of speed then is turned off after a set time or increased speed, Coasting On Demand allows you to enter coasting mode whenever you want with a press of a button. Often when coming to a stop, the throttle of a real locomotive is put into Idle and the engineer coasts to a stop. Another situation that occurs is that once a train is up to speed when rolling over the countryside, the driver can coast to maintain a certain speed. By pressing the coast function button, the sound drops to coasting and remains there. Using the throttle speed control, you can now speed up or slow down the train with the sound remaining in coasting mode.
Press the function button to exit coasting and return steam loco drive sound to whatever speed is set when exiting.
Sounds great when you toggle coasting on/off while driving a steam locomotive on your layout.
Press the Brake Function button and your locomotive will come to a stop at a much shorter distance than if you were to bring it to a stop by reducing the throttle speed. Release the brake and your locomotive will move off again or choose to have it remain stationary when the brake is released.
Cold and Hot Start Up Sequences
Select the Cold Start Up and you will activate the cold boiler preheat long start to hear the water being pumped into the boiler, the light of a match to start the fire, sound of the fire crackling, coal shovelling and the sounds of the pressure building up to reach the correct level before commencing to move off. Now that's something you won't hear from other sound decoders!
Select the Hot Start Up and you will activate the hot boiler quick start to skip the preheat assuming the correct boiler pressure is almost reached.Shut down your 30 Class and the sound just doesn't stop. Steam releases and other sounds will be heard as the locomotive shuts down.
Prototypical Headlight Operation.
We have also modified the headlight operation to resemble prototypical operation.
In the past you would have turned off the sound (Pressing F8) and all the sounds including the generator would stop playing but your headlight would remain on and you would have to turn it off separately. Well not anymore...
Press the headlight button (F0) to turn on the generator. The headlight won't turn on until enough power has been generated to turn the light on dimmed. While the generator is on the headlight stays on. If you press F8 to shut down and turn the loco sound off which will include the generator then the headlight will also turn off even if you haven't turned the headlight off itself using the headlight button.
Also added are:
· Automatic High Beam Headlight Function when the locomotive begins to drive. Bring the loco to a stop and the headlight will return to dim.
· Low Beam front headlight when reversing is also available.
Here at DCC Solutions we offer a light modification for the rear markers on the tender.
Optional light modification available: Replace the rear white markers on the tender to dual red/white LEDs to add red markers. This allows light engine running with the front headlight on and rear red markers. White markers for running in reverse, or no rear markers on at all when carrying a load or no lights at all on a trailing 30 class locomotive in a consist.
All this lighting is operated by function buttons on your DCC Throttle and not switches on the bottom of the tender.
